Calgary, AB (October 22, 2018) – On October 10, STEP Energy Services’ (STEP) newly commissioned coiled tubing (CT) spread, C22, marked its inaugural voyage as it travelled to Reeves County, Texas in the Permian Basin for a fishing operation. The CT spread includes a 14 foot wide trailer that holds up to 26,000 feet of 2-5/8” CT, allowing them to reach depths most of the competition cannot.

As a part of the new spread, the COMMAND CENTER has been redesigned with intuitive technology and automated systems. “Operationally speaking, this unit is more advanced than any CT equipment in the field, especially when we talk about ‘smart’ technology,” says Brock Duhon, vice president of U.S. coiled tubing and open-hole wireline services. “The COMMAND CENTER is fully automated and provides clients with state-of-the-art, in-depth monitoring and controls all from one central control cab. This means we can have one operator control the whole spread, allowing the rest of our professionals to do more walk-arounds and monitor the equipment.”

On the first project, STEP’s team of professionals were tasked with retrieving a fish left in the client's wellbore post-frac. After sufficiently cleaning the wellbore, the team was successful in retrieving the lost drillout BHA.

The spread also comes equipped with SERVAview, a software package that increases equipment performance, reliability and safety by reducing operator workload. “The data acquisition system is integral to automated operations and marks a material step change in the future of intervention and completion programs”, says James Minahan, sales manager of U.S. operations. “SERVAview allows real-time data to be streamed remotely, analyzed, and stored from remote locations. Most importantly, the upgraded hydraulic controls and smart software gives us access to in-depth diagnostics and helps proactively mitigate potential problems down-hole. This can save operators time and money that would otherwise be spent reactively solving problems.”

This intelligent COMMAND CENTER is the first of its kind and additional units will be in operation in the U.S. and Canada in the coming months.
