Environmental Responsibility

EVOLVING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

STEP proactively seeks opportunities to improve operational efficiencies, minimize environmental impact, and support our clients’ sustainability goals. We can achieve these goals by integrating innovative technologies and practices — without compromising the delivery of an Exceptional Employee Experience.

Our environmental priorities include:

  • Reducing GHG emissions
  • Improving fuel efficiency
  • Protecting air quality
  • Reducing freshwater use
  • Preventing spills
  • Safely managing chemicals

Proof points:

  • By using dual-fuel equipment, we helped clients displace ~18.7 million liters of diesel with natural gas in 2021.
  • We pioneered an industry-first fuel injection system for Tier 2 dual-fuel engines that provide diesel displacement rates of up to 70%.
  • We partnered with a client to convert a fleet of 16 pressure pumping units from conventional diesel to Tier 4 dual-fuel. By the end of 2023, over 60% of STEP’s total assets will be dual-fuel capable.

Social Responsibility

Unwavering Focus on Safety

STEP’s safety culture starts from the top, with strong leadership that sets clear expectations and empowers professionals to prioritize safety in all aspects of their work.

We provide comprehensive training and resources to ensure that our team members are equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform their jobs safely. STEP fosters a collaborative environment where open communication and reporting of safety concerns are encouraged. We are dedicated to continuously improving our safety practices to protect our professionals, clients, and communities.

Proof points:

  • Safety is our first priority and first core value.
ASAP (Always Safe Always Professional) is practiced and reinforced each day.
  • We saw a 30% decrease of our Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) in 2022 compared to 2020.
  • Our professionals drove 26.8M kilometres in 2022, and we saw an 87% reduction of motor vehicle incidents compared to 2020.
  • We achieved a 97% safety audit score (2022 COR audit score).

Social Responsibility

Supporting our communities

We are committed to building long-lasting partnerships with our stakeholders, and to the well-being of our professionals, clients, and communities.

By giving back to local communities through charitable foundations, events, and activities that are aligned with our core values, we uphold our social commitment and create positive social impacts.

Proof points:

  • STEP has raised over $1.2M for charitable organizations throughout North America.
  • In 2022, STEP professionals raised approximately $207,000 for local charities through our annual Christmas Spirit Campaign.
  • We have long-term relationships with academic institutions, such as Red Deer Polytechnic, to help support the development of high-quality education and training opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in the energy sector.
